Your Servant Will Meditate - Psalm 119:23
Even though princes sit plotting against me, your servant will meditate on your statutes. - Psalm 119:23
Here we see the high places, among the princes and majesty of the world, in which the psalmist sat. He was the point of scorn among those in power, and among whom were considered his equals. Yet among these men, there was no desire more significant than to show derision and contempt toward him. They plotted against him for his destruction. We see that even among those who ought to be the progenitors of truth and justice, there is boastful pride that will no doubt diverge them from the noble task of their office.
However, observe how the psalmist handles his trial. He does not cower or hide, nor does he retaliate out of rage or embarrassment. Instead, he entrusts himself to the Lord and refuses to do anything other than to meditate on God’s word. We are given a window into a certain calmness expressed by the psalmist due to meditating on God’s word.
Notice this situation. Those in power are maligning the psalmist. Not only is he maligned but plotted against for his demise, and yet he is going to the Lord. His confidence was in the Lord, not his power or armies. He recognized who’s servant he was; he was a servant of the most high God, who sits enthroned with more majesty than any earthly prince. The plotters sit plotting against David, and David sits imploring the Lord. David looks to God's most perfect law and answers his enemies by never uttering a word to them. From this, we see that those who sit at the feet of God grow in strength and peace. And we are reminded of our Lord who, although he was blameless, was plotted against and brought to the slaughter. He laid bare before a watching world, falsely accused, and yet he never uttered a word, but instead, he entrusted himself to the only God. We see here a foreshadowing of the suffering servant who was to come, the Lord Jesus Christ, and in his suffering, he submitted himself to God without reservation. It was our Lord who called little children to sit at his feet, and all to eat the bread of God’s word, and so he has left us with an example.
